We are pleased to report that our project to preserve the Leiston Grammar School sports team photographs for posterity formed a popular feature at our recent Open Day. Visitors were able to look through the indexes and the digitised photos in search of pictures of themselves or family members. Many were successful, and over 40 photos were requested and sent out by email.
Even better, following the event we have received eight new team photos that we didn’t have before. These will be digitised, added to the collection, and then returned to the owners. [That now brings our count of team photos to 93. - Ed.] There are still some gaps which are listed here (in the Update) in the hope further photos come to light.
Although the original LGS photos have been deposited with the Suffolk Record Office (SRO), our collection is available at our Help Centre in the Council Offices in Leiston - for opening times etc see our Help Centre page. If you have any queries or are unable to get to there, please contact John Martin at email@example.com.
Apart from the team photos, it was also the custom of LGS to take a panoramic photo of the whole school including pupils, teachers and staff. These were usually taken every other year. We inherited a few of these with the sports photos, but now with donations from Alumni — especially Angela Skinner — we have a dozen or so. We have decided to digitise these as well, and this will be done shortly. They will then be donated to the SRO, who have said they will be pleased to accept and preserve them. [The example at the head of this article is the third of four part-scans of the 1958 photo — if anyone has access to software to stitch the parts back together, could they please contact John? Thanks - Ed.]
However, there are still some missing panoramic photos, and we would like to be able put a complete set together. We would love to hear from anyone who can fill the following gaps —
Pre 1929; 1932-36; 1938-48; 1950/52 and 1965-70
