Our Help Centre contains much local information, including graveyard catalogues for Benhall, Saxmundham, Leiston, Eastbridge, Aldringham and Sutton; censuses, directories, information on local war memorials, books and historic maps. We have a large number of books, CD's and microfiches of local interest — in fact, we hold a wide variety of records for Suffolk and other counties. These are mostly physical resources not available online, but two downloadable PDF-documents are listed at the foot of this page.
A printed copy of the Index has been available in the Help Centre for some years. Rather more than half the items relate to Suffolk, and almost a quarter of the total to within just the Alde-Ore Valley. The valley comprises a quite small area — bounded broadly by Dunwich, Laxfield, Framlingham, Orford and Shingle Street — maybe 300 square miles (800 km²). Our only towns are Aldeburgh, Leiston, Saxmundham, Framlingham and Orford, but ALL places are listed, and this area is delineated graphically, on our Map page.
We believe our archive of the area is a unique resource that should be more available,
so its Index is now downloadable from the link at the foot of this page.
The Index is now an Excel-type spreadsheet, to simplify editing, sorting and searches of its current 600+ entries. We are bringing it back up to date, reconciling it with missing and recently acquired items, whilst expanding the indexing by adding a structured reference-id. Most items have only a single entry in the Index, but some have several, so such a reference may appear more than once.
For example, the lines …
SN0205 | Directory | Suffolk | Aldeburgh | 1962/1963 Street Directory — Aldeburgh, Leiston, Saxmundham and Districts
SN0314 | Directory | Suffolk | Leiston | 1962/1963 Street Directory … etc
SN0359 | Directory | Suffolk | Saxmundham | 1962/1963 Street Directory … etc
SN0631 | Directory | Suffolk | Alde Valley | 1962/1963 Street Directory … etc
… all point to the same one copy of the street directory which has (at least for now) been allocated reference "DIR1962AV". The fourth line (number 631) above is a new entry for "Alde Valley" (AV) to aid searching.
☞ You are welcome to download a copy of this Index, using the link below. It downloads as a spreadsheet, so you can then use your app's "Find" function to perform searches at your leisure.
As the file is (by definition) read-only, should you wish to edit and/or sort the data yourself, then select all the contents of the jobsheet/page (CTRL+A or ⌘+A), copy it (CTRL+C or ⌘+C) and paste it (CTRL+V or ⌘+V) into a new read-writable spreadsheet.
☞ If you identify any items of interest, please feel free to drop in at our fortnightly Help Centre sessions to view them in person.
If you are further afield, you are welcome to email any of our Committee members, listed on our Contact us page, for help with your enquiry.
☞ If you have any observations on the content or production of the Index, please email either or both of us.
